Dr. Akanand Singh is one of Nepal’s most renowned and pioneering hepatobiliary and liver transplant surgeons, celebrated for his leadership, surgical expertise, and contribution to advancing liver and HPB surgery across the nation.

He currently serves as Faculty of Surgery and Consultant Hepatobiliary & Liver Transplant Surgeon at KIST Medical College and Teaching Hospital, Lalitpur, and as Visiting Consultant Hepatobiliary and Liver Transplant Surgeon at Nepal Mediciti Hospital, Lalitpur. Previously, he held the position of Consultant Gastrointestinal and Hepatobiliary Surgeon at Grande International Hospital, Kathmandu, where he played a key role in developing advanced hepatobiliary and laparoscopic surgical services.

Dr. Singh has received extensive international training from world-leading centers, including the Mayo Clinic (USA) under the mentorship of Dr. Patrick P. Starlinger, a world-renowned HPB surgeon; Cleveland Clinic (USA) under Dr. Koji Hashimoto, Director of Liver Transplantation; Indraprastha Apollo Hospital, New Delhi (India) under Dr. Neerav Goyal; and Asan Medical Center, Seoul, South Korea, under Dr. Ki-Hun Kim, Professor and Director of the Asan Liver Center, where he specialized in hepatobiliary and liver transplant surgery. Dr. Singh’s academic journey began at the First Affiliated Hospital of Zhengzhou University, China—the world’s largest hospital, with a capacity exceeding 10,000 beds—where he earned his Bachelor in Clinical Medicine in 2009. Pursuing his passion for surgical excellence, he continued advanced training at Chongqing Medical University, China, completing his Master’s in General Surgery (2013) and subsequently earning a PhD in Hepatobiliary Surgery (2016) under the mentorship of Professor Gong Jianping, one of China’s most distinguished figures in hepatobiliary science and surgery. During his training in China, Dr. Singh was honored by the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China as a Distinguished International Student, a rare recognition that strengthened his foundation for pioneering hepatobiliary and liver transplant surgery in Nepal.

Among Nepal’s select few surgeons personally licensed by the Government of Nepal to perform liver transplant surgeries, Dr. Singh has been instrumental in expanding access to life-saving hepatobiliary and transplant care across the country. In 2021, he led the establishment of the first Liver Transplant Program outside Kathmandu at Chitwan Medical College, marking a historic milestone in Nepal’s surgical history. Continuing his trailblazing work, in 2023, Dr. Singh and his team achieved another national breakthrough by performing Nepal’s first Living Donor Combined Liver–Kidney Transplant (CLKT) at KIST Medical College and Teaching Hospital—an achievement that was later officially recognized by the Government of Nepal, Ministry of Health and Population and listed in its national progress report for the year 2080 B.S.. This landmark accomplishment set a new benchmark in the evolution of transplant medicine in Nepal.

His clinical expertise encompasses liver transplantation, complex hepatopancreaticobiliary surgery, gastrointestinal oncology, and advanced minimally invasive procedures. A prolific academic and researcher, Dr. Singh’s work has been published in leading international journals such as Transplantation, Gut, Journal of Inflammation Research, Pediatric Transplantation, etc. He is also a contributing author of the international medical textbook Clinical Nutrition: The Interface Between Metabolism, Diet, and Disease (Apple Academic Press, USA).

Dr. Singh’s excellence has been recognized globally with several prestigious honors, including the Young Investigator Award (2020) from the International Liver Transplant Society (ILTS), the SSAT Travelling Fellowship (Mayo Clinic, USA, 2023), and the Nepal Bidhya Bhushan “Ka” Award (2018) presented by the President of Nepal.

Fluent in English, Nepali, Chinese, and Hindi, Dr. Singh represents a rare blend of global expertise and national dedication. Through his surgical skill, academic contribution, and mentorship, he continues to redefine the standards of hepatobiliary and liver transplant surgery in Nepal.
